Noteworthy Books

LYE IN WAIT
HEAVEN PRESERVE US
SPIN A WICKED WEB
SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLEU

By Cricket McRae

This wonderful mystery series centers around crafter, Sophie Mae Reynolds.  All the mysteries are very engaging and work well on their own, but it you enjoy seeing the progression of the characters like I do, start from the beginning with LYE IN WAIT.  Each book also includes the recipes for the products that Sophie Mae makes and the foods which play a central part in the plot.  You can also check out Ms. McRae's website at www.cricketmcrae.com or read her blog(which is quite impressive) at www.hearthcricket.com.  I can't wait for the next installment that is coming out in the fall!

STAY

By Allie Larkin

STAY is not a mystery, but it is an amazing book nevertheless.  I picked it up at the library last summer and literally could not put it down.  The main character, Savannah, has been in love with her best friend since college and is heartbroken when he marries her best friend six years later.  In her despair, she orders a puppy off the internet and is shocked when a one-hundred pound German Shepard that only answers to Slovak arrives.  I won't spoil the story for you, but trust me when I tell you that you will laugh, cry, and enjoy every minute of this one.  It's a must read.

Thomas and Charlotte Pitt Mysteries

By Anne Perry

I've mentioned Anne Perry several times in some of my posts.  I absolutely love this series that is set in Victorian England.  This first is THE CATER STREET HANGMAN and the newest which just came out in April, is DORCHESTER TERRACE.  There are many wonderful mysteries in between.  Perry is a master of historical fiction.  They are great on their own, but start from the beginning to get to know the family history, though Perry does explain what you need to know in each of her books.   She also writes the William Monk detective series.  I've read a couple, but never really became a huge fan of those.

Brother Cadfael Mysteries

By Ellis Peters

Brother Cadfael is a 12th century monk who solves mysteries.  This series is an oldie but a goodie.  Ellis Peters was the pen name for British author Edith Pargeter who died in 1995.  Brother Cadfael is a medieval crime-solving monk.  THE HOLY THIEF is the first in the series and there are twelve others.  These books are wicked fun and a great read.  British actor, Sir Derek Jacobi, played Brother Cadfael in an extremely well-done series for PBS.  If these are still around on DVD, they are a must see!

THE COLD LIGHT OF MOURNING
 A BRUSH WITH DEATH

By Elizabeth J. Duncan

Love this series about Penny Brannigan, a manicurist in the picturesque Welsh village of Llanelen.  I'm partial to English backdrops, but I really found both of these mysteries to be page-turners.  Penny is an unconventional and engaging heroine who finds herself in the midst of a couple of juicy murders.  Her budding romance with the local inspector is an added bonus.  Both books are great reads!

DYSFUNCTIONAL ROMANCE

By Derick Hudson

Generally not a romance fan, but really enjoyed this off-beat tale of the unlikely union between unconventional lovers Barry and Sandra.  Witty dialogue along with a humorous plot set against an Irish backdrop make for a great summer read any time of the year.  You can also check out Mr. Hudson's blog at derickhudson.blogspot.com and follow him on Twitter @Derick_Hudson.
